Tisha B’Av Services
The upcoming fast day of Tisha B’Av (9th day of Av) is a day of mourning which commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and concludes the 3 week period of mourning that began with the 17th day of Tammuz.
Our Erev Tisha B’Av service will take place this year on Monday Evening, July 31st at 8:40pm prompt. During the services we read from the Book of Lamentations by candlelight and sing songs recalling the glory of ancient Jerusalem.
We will hold the Mincha service for Tisha B’Av on Tuesday, August 1st at 6:30 PM. Since Tallit and Tefillin are not worn in the morning (as a sign of distress over the destruction of Jerusalem), they are put on later in the day as a kind of reconciliation with God, as the fast day comes to a close. There is also a brief Torah reading service at that time.
So please remember to bring your Tallit and Tefillin for the Tuesday evening minyan (as they are not worn in the morning during Shachrit).
